The story of Hunter Huon Valley
A change of pace, a change of place, and a reason to build something worth switching off for.
The move
We left Melbourne for a valley already living at the right speed.
Hunter started with a change of pace. We had spent years at the speed a city sets, and what we wanted was days with more room in them. The Huon Valley was the place that kept pulling us back.
Part of it was everything growing here. Apple orchards and cider houses, cool-climate vineyards, cheesemakers, bakers and growers who have spent their working lives learning one thing properly. You can eat and drink a whole weekend of this valley within twenty minutes of the front door, and the people who make it are the reason it is worth the drive down.
The rest of it was the landscape. The river, the hills going gold at six, the mist that sits in the valley until mid-morning. We built Hunter so people could have all of that without having to organise any of it.
What Hunter is for
Switch off, and lose yourselves in it.
There are no televisions in the cabins and there is no wifi. That is the point of the place, not something we forgot to install.
What happens instead is the thing guests write about afterwards. A whole evening in front of the fire. A conversation that runs longer than it would have at home. A morning that starts with mist coming off the river rather than a screen. Time in the bush, time in the bath, and time with the person you came with.
In three years of reviews, not one guest has told us they missed it.
What we’re about
Three cabins, made by people who live here.
Three architecturally designed cabins sit on 36 acres of private bushland at Glen Huon, spaced far enough apart that you can spend a whole weekend without seeing another one. Inside, the interiors are contemporary and warm, built around custom and handcrafted pieces from artisans working in this part of Tasmania.
